2008 Post-Doctoral Scholar in
Co-Occurring Substance Abuse, Personality and Other Mental Disorders

Program Description

The UCSD Co-Occurring Disorders (COD) Program is seeking applicants for a one to two year post-doctoral scholar in co-occurring substance abuse and other mental disorders. The UCSD COD Program is a model of comprehensive integrated treatment. It originated as a SAMHSA funded Demonstration Project in 1997 and was among the first integrated treatment programs in the country. Research foci include study of attachment status, trauma, dissociation, neurocognitive and personality variables in COD etiology, course and outcome.

Postdoctoral Duties and Responsibilities

The scholar will play a central role in developing the research agenda for the program and pursuing grant funding and will be intimately involved in clinical research, delivery of clinical care, and program evaluation. Split about 50-50 between research and clinical duties, the ideal candidate will have a strong background in research methodology, writing and providing clinical care to patients with addictions and/or severe mental disorders.
The scholar will work under the supervision of Patricia A. Judd, Ph.D with additional research supervision by Ian Everall, MD and will be part of the UCSD Outpatient Psychiatric Services research team. The Scholar will also assist in selection and supervision of research assistants. Multiple additional learning opportunities are available within the Department. Scholars participate in weekly clinical supervision, evaluation team meetings, seminars and research supervision. Scholars will be encouraged to develop independent clinical research, to publish and present research findings, and will be supported in seeking extramural funding.

UCSD Department of Psychiatry
Postdoctoral Positions in Behavioral Neuroscience in the areas of nicotine dependence, depression and schizophrenia

Postdoctoral fellow positions available in Athina Markou's laboratory, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Diego. These fellowships will involve the study of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying nicotine dependence, depression and/or schizophrenia. The applicants should have a strong background in psychopharmacology and/or behavioral neuroscience, with an interest in psychiatric disorders and/or nicotine dependence. Experience with rodent survival surgery, intravenous drug self-administration and intracranial self-stimulation is desirable. Applicants with a strong background in molecular biology that have some experience with behavior and have an interest in expanding their expertise in behavioral neuroscience may also apply, although some behavioral experience is required. The successful applicants will be highly motivated individuals with good communication skills, interest and experience in psychopharmacology, behavioral neuroscience and/or drug discovery as they relate to psychiatric disorders and nicotine dependence, and ability to work independently. The applicants should have at least 2-4 first author publications accepted in quality peer-reviewed journals. The ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team is essential. Applicants that have their own postdoctoral funding or are USA citizens or permanent residents are strongly encouraged to apply.

Postdoctoral Positions in Neuroscience in the Areas of Methamphetamine Dependence and Psychosis

A postdoctoral position is available immediately for work on a collaborative multidisciplinary project between Dr. Ron Kuczenski’s and Dr. Athina Markou’s laboratories.

This position will involve the study of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying methamphetamine dependence and neurotoxicity, and how excessive exposure to methamphetamine leads to psychotic-like states. Sophisticated in vivo and in vitro neurochemical techniques, including in vivo microdialysis, as well as behavioral techniques, including intravenous methamphetamine self-administration, will be used.

Applicants should have a strong background in neurochemistry, psychopharmacology and/or behavioral neuroscience, with an interest in drug dependence and psychiatric disorders. Experience with in vivo microdialysis, neurochemical analytical techniques, rodent survival surgery and/or intravenous drug self-administration are desirable but not required. The successful applicant will be a highly motivated individual with good communication skills, interest and experience in neuroscience, drug dependence and psychiatric disorders, and ability to work independently.

The applicant should have at least 2-4 first author publications accepted in quality peer-reviewed journals. The abilities to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary research team are essential.
