Biography

David S. Janowsky M.D. received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of California, San Francisco and completed his psychiatry residency at the University of California, Los Angeles and at the intramural program at the National Institutes of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland, where he was a US Public Health Service officer. He has held faculty positions at UCSD, UCLA, Vanderbilt University, and the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill. He is a past Chair of of the Department of Psychiatry at UNC and a past Director of the Center for Alcohol Studies at that institution. Dr Janowsky is currently a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCSD and the Associate Director of Outpatient Psychiatric Services (OPS). He is known for his expertise in the study and pharmacological and psychological treatment of bipolar and related affective disorders. Dr. Janowsky was previously the director of the UCSD Affective Disorders Mental Health Clinical Research Center. His research has focused primarily on the psychobiology of affective disorders and schizophrenia, the psychobiology of ovarian hormone linked emotional disorders, the relationship of core personality and temperament to psychiatric diagnosis and outcome, and the development of anti-craving drugs using animal models of alcoholism.
