Dr. McQuaid’s research addresses two primary areas. The first is the role of life stress in psychopathology. Current studies of this include examination of the role of life stress as a mediator of treatment response for patients with comorbid depression and substance abuse. The second area is development and evaluation of cognitive behavioral interventions. Current studies in this area include a randomized controlled trial of CBT for comorbid depression and substance dependence, randomized controlled trials of CBT for psychosis, and a pilot study of CBT and visual feedback for the management of phantom limb pain.
Clinical Focus
Dr. McQuaid’s runs two clinics. The Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Program (CBIP) provides group and individual cognitive-behavioral therapy for major depression, bipolar disorder, and related problems. The Family Mental Health Program provided evidence-based couples therapy, and some family therapy, for veterans with relationship distress. Dr. McQuaid is also the co-director of the Special Treatment and Evaluation Program (STEP), a multidisciplinary outpatient mood clinic of which the CBIP clinic is a component. The STEP clinic provides diagnostic assessment services and pharmacotherapy, in addition to CBT through CBIP.
