Biography
Dr. McKibbin earned a B.S. at Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of North Texas. Following a geropsychology internship at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, she completed three postdoctoral fellowships. These included training in health services at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System; training in aging and interventions research at Stanford University; and finally, training in geriatric psychiatry at UCSD’s Advanced Center for Innovation in Services and Interventions Research. After receiving an NIMH Career Development Award, she joined the UCSD faculty.
Research Focus
Dr. McKibbin’s research interests involve strategies to improve functioning and reduce disability in patients with serious mental illness. Her recent projects include the Physical Activity and Nutrition (PAN) study, study to characterize physical activity and dietary habits in middle-aged and older patients with schizophrenia, the Diabetes Awareness and Rehabilitation Training (DART) study, a study to reduce obesity and improve diabetes self-management in patients with schizophrenia and type 2 diabetes mellitus, and the Saludable (Healthy) study, a culturally adapted healthy lifestyle intervention for middle-aged and older Latino patients with serious mental illness and their family members.
