Biography
Dr. Maser received his doctorate from Temple University in
1969 and accepted an Assistant Professorship at Tulane
University in the Department of Psychology. There he taught
physiological psychology, neuroscience and other courses as
needed by the department. In 1975 he accepted an offer from
the National Institute of Mental Health, and for the next 24
years, worked in both review and program components. While at
the NIMH Dr. Maser’s interests shifted to clinical issues
and he began publishing papers and books focused on anxiety
and other clinical problems. In 1999 he retired from the
federal government to accept an offer from UCSD.
Research Focus
His primary responsibility is to work with faculty and
students to obtain extramural research funding. Twenty-four
years experience at NIMH provides the background for his
expertise. He also collaborates with researchers conducting a
22-year follow-up of depressed patients, and he has research
projects in conjunction with the Psychiatry Department in
Pisa, Italy. The research in Italy addresses a spectrum
concept of psychopathology, as opposed to the DSM-IV’s
categorized format. The spectrum project involves clinical
investigators in the USA and Italy. In addition to the
diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV, the group studies subthreshold
conditions, non-criterion symptoms, and long-term
traits.
