Biography Dr. Myers received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1991 from the UCSD/SDSU Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology and completed an internship and post-doctoral fellowship at the Brown University Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies. He is a faculty member of the UCSD/SDSU Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology and a member of the UCSD Cancer Center. Dr. Myers has participated in several NIH study sections and currently serves on the editorial boards of 2 addiction journals. He is author on over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers and has been the Principal Investigator on 7 NIH and state-funded grants.
Research Focus
Dr. Myers’s program of research examines the course of youth substance use and abuse. The broad goals of his research are 1) to understand processes underlying youth addictive behaviors, and 2) to inform the design of interventions for youth substance use behaviors. The populations investigated in Dr. Myers’s studies have included teens in treatment for alcohol and other drug abuse, high school adolescents and college students. His work has examined the process of adolescent relapse following substance abuse treatment and cigarette smoking among substance abusing youth. Dr. Myers current research focuses primarily on the process of youth smoking cessation and college student tobacco use initiation and progression.
Clinical Focus
Dr. Myers is lead clinician for tobacco use cessation and director of the Mental Health Tobacco Use Cessation Program for the San Diego Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. The program provides specialized tobacco cessation services for veterans with co-morbid psychiatric disorders. Treatment services include group treatment for veterans with substance use disorders, group treatment for veterans with psychiatric disorders, and individual tobacco cessation counseling.
