General Psychiatry Inpatient Services
The Adult Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Inpatient Psychiatry Unit is located in Hillcrest and offers leading-edge treatment and consultation therapies delivered by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare experts, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and social workers. The Senior Behavioral Health inpatient service is a 14-bed inpatient acute geriatric psychiatry service. It was established in July 1997 to provide the highest quality individualized clinical care for senior adults needing behavioral health and medical treatment, and to do so in a clinically sophisticated, safe, comfortable, supportive and responsive treatment environment. Senior adult patients who are 65 and older are admitted voluntarily to the Unit for short-term treatment and care. Treatment services are provided by a multi-disciplinary and multi-specialty team and delivered with an integrated approach to the patient’s psychiatric and medical conditions.

Outpatient services are available through specialty clinics that cover a range of disorders impacting patients of all ages. We incorporate the latest findings in the field of behavioral health in our delivery of care to our patients.

UC San Diego Psychiatric Associates
UC San Diego Psychiatric Associates is a private practice based mental health service for adults in the San Diego area who have health insurance or are self-pay. Psychiatric Associates is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, and clinical social workers, and offers comprehensive psychiatric & psychological evaluation, medication treatment, individual psychotherapy, specialized group therapy (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Mentalization-Based Therapy), couples and family therapy, and psychiatric consultations.

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Clinics
The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services (CAPS) program is an inpatient unit for children and adolescents up to age 18 with psychiatric illness. The unit is located on the third floor of the Nelson Family Pavilion. Comprehensive psychiatric care is provided by a highly experienced team of specialists from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and specially trained health professionals from Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.

Gero Psychiatry
Outpatient services are available through specialty clinics that cover a range of disorders impacting patients of all ages. We incorporate the latest findings in the field of behavioral health in our delivery of care to our patients.

College Mental Health
The UCSD Health Sciences College Mental Health team provides integrative, culturally sensitive and multi-disciplinary mental health services, both on and off-campus, for UCSD’s approximately 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Mental health care is integrated with the Department of Psychiatry to ensure timely access to initial and ongoing psychiatric services. Our program emphasizes patient-centered, quality care and supports students’ academic success and personal development.

Specialty Programs

Cancer Center
Moores Cancer Center Patient & Family Support Services is a specialized service dedicated to the strengthening of meaning, value, resilience, transcendence, dignity, and improved quality of life; and the relief of emotional suffering by working as part of the care teams to provide integrated, whole-person, trans-disciplinary patient and family centered cancer care. Our focus is on alleviating suffering and promoting dignity with time-limited services for patients and families during the course of care or soon after completing cancer treatment. We specifically focus on patients who have developed issues as a result of their cancer, and those whose pre-existing issues are impacting their ability to engage in treatment. Our services are available to patients and families dealing with cancer and receiving care at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center or other UC San Diego affiliated cancer care sites.

The Chronic Pain and Opioid Detox Treatment Program
The Chronic Pain Treatment Program in the department of Psychiatry offers comprehensive evaluation, treatment planning, and care for patients with chronic and disabling pain that requires intensive rehabilitation. Our team works closely with pain physician experts from the department of Anesthesia and we specialize in improving function quality of life to people with chronic pain. Some patients have required high-dose chronic pain killers to function and would benefit from detoxing from those medications in a safe and effective way. For those patients we offer medically-assisted detox using Suboxone and other modalities to help our patient to wean off their opiate pain medication slowly without discomfort.

Biofeedback Treatment
We provide biofeedback treatment as an adjunct to other treatments to assist patients in. Biofeedback is a technique that helps people improve their health by controlling bodily processes that normally happen involuntarily, such as heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and skin temperature. Biofeedback is used to help treat conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, tension, chronic pain and headaches.

Dual Diagnosis

Eating Disorders
The UCSD Eating Disorders Center for Treatment and Research offers a range of treatment options for children, adolescents and adults with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and other eating disorders. Each individual receives an initial assessment followed by comprehensive, evidence based treatment. Our staff consists of experienced professionals who are located on-site and specialize in eating disorder treatment. Disciplines represented include psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and registered dietitians. The services offered a continuum of care model, including Intensive Outpatient Therapy (IOP), Day Treatment (DT), a specialized Intensive Family Based Therapy program (IFT), as well as, Inpatient Medical Stabilization in collaboration with Rady Children’s Hospital. We have an international reputation for developing new understandings of why people develop eating disorders as well as applying new evidence based treatments. Importantly, our staff is carefully trained and supervised to deliver these treatments.

Sexual Health
Clinicians at the UCSD Psychiatry Sexual Health clinic-- work with patients individually, and his/her partner, to provide evaluations and treatment for a broad spectrum of sexual concerns including Low sexual desire, arousal difficulties, difficulty achieving orgasm and aversion to sexual activities.

Treatment Resistant Depression
The UCSD Center for the Advanced Treatment of Mood and Anxiety Disorders (CATMAD), offers patients with Depression and Anxiety disorders that have not responded to standard medication and psychotherapy, advanced integrated treatment options such as Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, ketamine and scopolamine infusion therapy. We also offer ECT which is conveniently available for outpatients at Thornton hospital in La Jolla for individuals who do not require hospitalization, for those who are continuing their course from an inpatient stay, and for ongoing maintenance.

Treatment Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
The UCSD TMS Center was the first in San Diego to provide FDA cleared TMS for patients with depression and other brain based disorders. The center operates both the Neurostar repetitive TMS system and the Brainsway deep TMS system providing patients a full range of TMS options to suit their clinical needs.

Consultative services
The Consult-Liaison Psychiatry Service is a multidisciplinary team that includes attending psychiatrists and psychologists and psychiatry residents and medical students and certified addiction counselors and licensed clinical social worker. Our focus is psychiatric and psychological consultation to medically ill patients as well as providing education, emotional support, and assistance with treatment to primary care medical teams caring for these patients.

The Memory, Aging and Resilience Clinic (MARC) at UC San Diego Health System provides comprehensive outpatient cognitive, emotional and physical health evaluations of older adults. This unique program draws on the expertise of the UC San Diego physicians and other clinicians in numerous specialties to assess the overall health of older adults- with particular focus on memory and thinking. The program also provides fitness mentoring and longevity classes.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorders
The UC San Diego Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders (OCD) Clinic offers specialized assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with OCD as well as related disorders such as: Hoarding Disorder, Trichotillomania, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Tourette's Syndrome, and co-occurring conditions. We offer treatment with both medications and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and stress the integration of psychopharmacological and psychological treatment interventions. All treatment is provided in an elegant outpatient setting in La Jolla.

Adult ADHD
Founded in 1995, this program was the first anywhere devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of Adult ADHD. The program provides a team-approach to comprehensive diagnostic assessment for ADHD in adults. Expert treatment for those positively diagnosed is also available.

Early Psychosis
The Cognitive Assessment and Recovery Enhancement (CARE) Program provides comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment for individuals ages 12-30 who are showing early or emerging signs of psychosis. Services include Diagnostic Consultation, Pharmacotherapy, Psychoeducation, Individual and Group Psychotherapy with a focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Social Skills Training, Case Management and Family therapy.

Neuropsychological Associates (NPA)
UCSD Neuropsychological Associates (NPA) is a consultation assessment program directed and operated by the Department of Psychiatry of the UCSD School of Medicine. The program offers neuropsychological testing services for the evaluation of a broad range of cognitive and behavioral disturbances resulting from brain dysfunction and psychiatric disorders in children, adolescents, younger adults and older adults.

Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment and Research Program
The UC San Diego Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment and Research Program provides evidence based treatment for individuals suffering from substance use and other mental disorders. The program provides one year of treatment including individual, group and family therapy, medication management and case management services provided by an interdisciplinary staff of behavioral health professionals and trainees. The Program is funded through San Diego County Behavioral Health Services Division for individuals who meet criteria for specialty mental health services and are indigent or have Medi-Cal and/or Medicare insurance.

Intensive Outpatient Programs

The UC San Diego Senior Behavioral Health Program is an inpatient, outpatient and community-based program that offers an integrated psychiatric and medical approach specifically designed for seniors. The program helps patients gain new insights, enhance self-esteem and build coping skills while also addressing their physical problems.

Chronic Pain
The UCSD Psychiatry Pain Intensive Outpatient Program is for individuals with chronic pain and typically requires a 4-6 week commitment. The IOP consists of an interdisciplinary of psychologists, psychiatrists, physical therapists and pharmacists who teach patients skills that will improve a person’s level of functioning and help them address the emotional and psychological impact of living with chronic pain.

Maternal Mental Health
The UCSD Maternal Mental Health program was created in 2007 to address the mental health needs of women. The clinic provides comprehensive mental health services for women to assist in their recovery from anxiety, depression, or other emotional concerns during infertility, pregnancy, or the postpartum period.

Early Psychosis
The Cognitive Evaluation and Recovery Enhancement Program (CARE) Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is located in Hillcrest at the UCSD Outpatient Psychiatry facility. Serving adolescents and young adults ages 12-30 with early symptoms of psychosis, the IOP operates 3 days per week. Individuals receive psychoeducation, group therapy with a focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Social Skills Training, pharmacotherapy and case management. Family groups are also provided each week as part of the IOP.
