Dr. Andrea Hazen’s current work focuses on mental health screening, assessment and treatment for children and families involved with child welfare services. She has published on mental health service use by children involved with public service systems, intimate partner violence experienced by families involved with the child welfare system, intimate partner violence among Latina women, and screening for depression, intimate partner violence and substance use in the perinatal period.

Research Focus

Dr. Hazen’s current research interests are focused on mental health screening, assessment and treatment for children and families involved with child welfare services. She has expertise in child maltreatment and intimate partner violence research and program evaluation. Dr. Hazen oversees the treatment outcome program for the Trauma Counseling Program and for the KidSTART Mental Health Clinic at the Chadwick Center for Children and Families at Rady Children’s Hospital. She is the lead evaluator for two federally funded grants awarded to the Chadwick Center which are focused on the delivery of trauma informed services in child welfare systems and on the implementation of screening, assessment, and evidence-based treatment to address the mental health needs of children involved with child welfare services.
