How much do studies cost?

There is NO COST to you. You'll receive medication, brief individualized counseling (10-30 minutes per session), and medical assessments from our study physician free of charge. We will also provide compensation for your time and travel.

How long does this study take?

Each study is a little different, but typically your first visit will be about 2-3 hours and other visits will be 45-60 minutes. Participants are typically asked to take medication for 12 weeks and come to weekly office visits during that time. We also usually have follow-up visits or phone calls for 3-6 months after the medication period is over.

What can I expect during a screening visit?

Although each study is different, several aspects of the screening visit are similar across studies. We will review a consent form with you and answer any questions you might have. We will ask you to complete several questionnaires and conduct an interview where we ask about different psychological symptoms people sometimes experience, as well as information about your alcohol, tobacco and drug use. Our study physician will ask you about your medical history and will conduct a physical exam. An electrocardiogram (EKG) exam will be conducted, and blood samples will be collected to ensure that you are healthy enough to participate in the study. Breath Alcohol Content (breathalyzer) tests and urine drug toxicology screens will also be performed. All of our studies require that your Breath Alcohol Content is 0.000 at your screening visit to ensure that you are competent to consent to the study. Smoking studies also conduct carbon monoxide breath tests and sometimes collect saliva samples.

I just started a new medication, will that affect my participation?

Please let us know if you start using any new medications or any other nicotine replacement products prior to your appointment and study enrollment.

I have an appointment coming up, but I can't make it, what should I do?

If you find that you are unable to keep your appointment for any reason or if your availability for future visits changes, please call to let us know at 858-246- HOPE (4673)

Is this confidential?

Yes, your participation and/or inquiry about our research studies will be kept strictly confidential.
