Second Year

General Competencies

In year 2, the resident must demonstrate increasing knowledge, skills and attitudes in the six general competencies including: patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning, professionalism, and systems-based practice.

Knowledge

In year 2, the resident must build upon the knowledge base of year 1, noted above. In addition, the resident must demonstrate increasing knowledge in the following areas:

  1. The indications, contraindications and potential adverse effects of hospital-based care including inpatient treatment
  2. The role of the child psychiatrist within the multidisciplinary team in outpatient clinics.
  3. Principles of consultation to community systems of care
  4. Principles of school and forensic consultation
  5. Medical and psychiatric administration in outpatient and community settings
  6. The basic information presented in the Year 2 clinical and didactic curriculum, augmented by self-directed learning in biological, social and clinical sciences related to child and adolescent psychiatry.
  7. Principles and practices of managed care and health care delivery
  8. Principles of professional practice including insuring patient safety, quality assurance, utilization review, and performance improvement
  9. Quantitative methods and a range of research methodology
  10. Methods of teaching medical students, psychiatric residents, a range of related professionals that care for children, adolescents and families in clinical and community settings, parents, and the public regarding normal and abnormal development, psychopathology, methods of therapeutic intervention, and prevention
  11. Ability to conduct assessments and treatments within a continuum of care

Skills

In year 2, the resident must build upon the skills developed in year 1 noted above. In addition, the resident must demonstrate increasing skill in the following areas:

  1. Ability to develop and implement a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan for children and adolescents in inpatient and outpatient settings
  2. Ability to work as a member of the multidisciplinary team in outpatient and community settings
  3. Ability to run groups in outpatient settings
  4. Ability to provide effective consultation to medical settings, schools and courts
  5. Ability to effectively consult to community systems of care
  6. Ability to teach medical students, residents, allied professionals caring for children, adolescents and families, and lay individuals about normal and abnormal development, psychopathology, and principles of prevention
  7. Ability to function as an administrator in ambulatory settings

Attitudes

In year 2, the resident must build upon the attitudes in year 1, as specified in the six core competencies.
