Team Effectiveness Readings

The following articles are useful for individuals new to team effectiveness research (TER). They provide an introduction to common TER constructs of interest.

Team Effectiveness 1997-2007: A Review of Recent Advancements and a Glimpse Into the Future

  • Mathieu et al. (2008): This is a review that goes from 1997-2007. It provides definitions of trust, shared mental models (SMM), and psychological safety.
Does Team Communication Represent a One-Size Fits-All Approach? A Meta-Analysis of Team Communication and Performance
  • Marlow et al. (2018): This meta-analysis provides a definition of team communication, as well as discusses communication characteristics and forms.

 Embracing Complexity: Reviewing the Past Decade of Team Effectiveness Research

  • Mathieu et al. (2019): This paper provides a presentation of many TER constructs of interest, including teamwork, processes, emergent states, composition, and structure.  

The Development and Construct Validity of a Team Processes Survey Measure

  • Mathieu et al. (2020):  This paper provides definitions of goal specification, strategy formulation, and coordination. Additionally, it also represents the validation effort of a scale that measures action, transition, and interpersonal processes from the original Marks et al. conceptualization.
